I wonder what WHQ's source is. Technical groups I belong to either
survey all members or collect that information when we re-register.
WHQ must be doing some sort of statical sample because, I've never
been asked any of that information. But, I've only been a member for
20 years. So, maybe they will get to me.
There list of industries is interesting. Management isn't an
industry; it's a job function. In our Division, the majority of the
members would probably classified as technical. (That would include
engineers, technicians, pharmacists, dietitians technical managers and
other occupations.) Sales would probably be next. (That would
include inside sales, direct sales, self employed.) My source is
people I've talked to in the Division. This isn't a list of industries
either. My company employs people in both of these categories.

If they did a sample, they probably wouldn't need a
particularly large sample to get results that are
statistically significant.
It's similar to what political polling companies do. That
is, results are accurate to within +/- 3% 19 times out of
20.
Of course, given there are now Toastmasters clubs in
something like 80 countries, and some of those countries may
not have more than a couple of clubs, the question then
becomes how representative are the numbers of the overall
Toastmasters population. Or to put it another way, the
results may be typical of Toastmasters in continental North
America only.

Industries is possibly one where they wouldn't need to go
through a formal survey process. How many menbers, when
they finish an award (CC, CL, AC, AL, DTM) get Toastmasters
to send their employer a letter? You could infer a lot by
taking a look at the companies to which you are sending the
letters. For example, if the letter is goiing to a manager
at Chase Manhattan Bank or the Royal Bank of Canada, I'd say
odds are pretty good the member works in the financial
services industry. (BTW, WHQ sent out over 21,000 CC awards
last Toastmasters year.)
