I'm thinking of talking about a rather emotional topic maybe for this
speech to illustrate my vocal variety, but I would first like to find
if there's an option of not talking about a more emotional topic but
still manage to use vocal variety. Any suggestions would be most
welcomed.

One possibility is to tell a story. Stories almost always offer the
opportunity for vocal variety. If there are different people in the story,
you can use different voices for each character. Or you can do things like
talking about rushingaroundtogetreadyforwork, and then d-r-i-v-i-n-g i-n
t-h-e s-l-ooo-w r-u-s-h- h-o-u-r t-r-a-f-f-i-c, for instance.

How would I deal with the situations where expressive phrases are
being used?

Ask yourself how you can use vocal variety to enhance them. Even simple
phrases can be enhanced by vocal variety:

_I_ ran to the bathroom
I _ran_ to the bathroom
I ran _to_ the bathroom
I ran to _the_ bathroom
I ran to the _bathroom_
I...ran to the bathroom
I ran...to the bathroom
I ran to...the bathroom

One could say it quickly, say it slowly, one could say it calmly or with
drammatic overstatement. Whatever your expressive phrases, there are ways to
enhance them depending on their context and the story.

Seconding what others said, you *can* use vocal variety in any type of
speechs or topic. [PAUSE]

And you *should* use vocal variety with EVERY speech.

For better understanding of what vocal variety is, read the booklet that
came with the new member kit.

And remember, vocal variety includes PAUSE!

Good luck.

Joy has a very good point.

Because storytelling demands so much in the area of vocal
variety, storytelling topics make excellent subjects when
you want to develop vocal variety.
