I'm assuming that for everyone Humorous is held at the Fall conference, and
International at the spring. If your district does Table topics, Evaluation,
and/or Tall Tales, when are these contests held?

District 33 only does Evaluation and Tall Tales. They generally hold the
Evaluation contest two or three times in a row, then throw in a Tall Tales
contest the next time. District 52 does all three, but they seen to hold
Tall Tales less often than the other two. It is my understanding that the
District officers decide each time, so it can vary quite a bit.

District 50 has its Humorous (Humourous) Speech and Tall Tales contests
at the same time in the fall.

International Speech and Evaluation contests are held at the same time
in the spring. I don't know when Table topics is held.

You can take a look at http://www.toastmastersd50.org for a calendar of
District 50 events.

I should be more clear - when do they hold them within the year? For
instance, at my last district they held the eval contest in the spring in
parallel with the International speech contest, and its final was on the
same day as Intl at district, i nthe morning while Intl was in the evening.
In my current district they're planning on holding eval at TLI in January,
which I think adds someting of additional interest to the proceedings (t's
the first time in 4 year they've had an eval contest).

In District 38, Table Topics Contest is held with Humorous at the Fall
Conference, and Evaluation Contest is held with International Speech
Contest at the Spring Conference. In Fall 1994, District 38 had Tall
Tales instead of Humorous at the Fall Conference as well as an
unsanctioned contest called 20-second evaluation. Word didn't get out to
the club I was in at the time in time regarding Tall Tales, so we held a
Humorous Speech contest, like we had the previous two years.
Fortunately, the person who won was able to re-do her speech into a Tall
Tales format. My club also did not have a 20-second evaluation contest
because we were all somewhat inexperienced with 2-3 minute evaluations
and didn't really want to try something new at the time.

Until last fall, at every District Conference I was familiar with, all
contests were held on Saturdays, although sometimes they were at
different times of the day. This past program year, the first in which
our District had seven Divisions and thus seven potential contestants,
the non-speech contests were moved to Friday nights. I didn't like this
idea, especially since I was in one of those Friday night contests. And
apparently there were others who felt like I do because the preliminary
schedule for the upcoming Fall schedule has them both on Saturday.

As you mentioned, the Humorous Speech Contest is in the fall and the
International Speech Contest is in the spring. I guess I didn't make myself
clear. There is no regular schedule for the other contests. District 33
may have the Evaluation Contest twice in one year, then have Tall Tales the
next spring and Evaluation again in the fall. Sometimes they alternate.
Each new group of District officers choose which contest to hold when. That
means each year's schedule can be different. The same goes for District 52,
except they usually alternate Evaluation and Table Topics, occasionally
throwing in Tall Tales, which moves the other two ahead half a year.

This fall, both Districts are doing Evaluations.

District 52 is relatively small geographically, so both contests are held on
a Saturday. Usually there are educationals in the morning, the secondary
(Evaluation, Table Topics or Tall Tales) contest is held immediately after
lunch, followed by the business meeting and then the major contest.

District 33 is considerably larger, so the conference begins with a party on
Friday evening. I think everything else is done on Saturday now, but
sometimes they finish with a Sunday brunch. The contests are usually both
on Saturday.

In district 70, the International and Evaluation contests are held at a
conference in May (southern autumn, northern spring) and the humorous and
Table Topics in October (southern spring, northern fall)

Here in Hong Kong (part of District 80 with Macau, Thailand &
Singapore), we have the Evaluation & Humourous Contests in the Autumn
(Fall) and the Table Topics and Int'l Speech Contests in Spring.

Incidentally, I was reading about Tall Tales in the Toastmaster this
month. We don't have this contest. I felt the article lacked a good
explanation of what a Tall Tale is. I'm a Brit and I always thought a
tall tale was a lie. Can anyone enlighten me?

Yes, a tall tale is, essentially, one big colorful lie. It's a story
full of outrageous exagerrations and impossible solutions. There are
usually puns and really bad jokes scattered throughout these stories,
as well.

We usually hold a Table Topics contest with the Humorous Speech
contest, and the Evaluation contest with the Intl. Speech contest. Last
year we had a Tall Tales contest instead of the Humorous Speech contest.

Or, to put it succinctly, a tall tale is a big lie that is so
ridiculous it's funny.

And that's the explanation right from the author of the article :-)

My current district - D9, holds the Table Topics and Humorous contest
in the fall - with TT after lunch at District, Humorous after dinner.
Similarly, they run Evaluation and International in the Spring.

In District 15, my old stomping grounds, they run Evaluation and
Humorous in the Fall, and, alternating each year, Table Topics/Tall
Tales, as well as International in the Spring.

No other contests are held. I think it would be cool if we held
informal contests on tall tales, interpretive reading, storytelling,
debating, or anything else at TLI's. Maybe that would improve the
Esprit de Corps (sp).

We run international, Impromptu (Table Topics), and Evaluation from
February to May. Most Clubs, Areas, and Divisions run all three on the
same occasion. At the District conference, in May, the three are
usually held sequentially.

We do much the same with the Humorous speech contest from August to
October.
