Hi Nigel

Whatever you do please don't stagnate. Become an ambassador for your
club and your area... start pulling inter-club activities together and
inter-area activities together... promote competition practice amongst
members by hosting some mock-up competitions between clubs and between
areas... get creative and make life interesting and challenging!!!!
Who knows... it could be fun!

Warmest regards
Jean

Did you miss the bit about me being AG? I think I have plenty to keep me
busy right now with competition season fast approaching.

Me too, Joy, plus I don't like the policy that you have to complete all
the advanced manuals before you can repeat one. There are some manuals
for which I have no use. If I could do The Entertaining Speaker over
and over it would be different, but instead I'll take the other option
and do CTMs from here on.

Congratulations Colin! I hope a DTM lies in my near future as well.

These are the accomplishments that, more than anything, keep
Toastmasters running well.

Rich.

You only have to complete all the advanced manuals before repeating if you

want credit for them.

Unfortunately my club counts on me and one other person to get them
their DCP.

How I wish I could just do the advanced projects that interest and/or
benefit me, without worrying about the damn DCP ribbon. And I wish I
could take my time on these projects and really do a beautiful job
rather than mass produce speeches. But, every year I fall for the
pressure to get that ribbon! Looks like the same old people end up
giving all the speeches, just like the same old people end up holding
offices.

The point program was before my time, but in theory it sounds better to
me than the DCP program. Any feedback from you more experienced members
on the pros and cons of the old point system? I must admit that I don't
think the DCP program works all that well.

And if you want to keep making speeches, you could still repeat the basic
manual. It keeps changing, so it won't be quite the same as last time, and
naturally you could do different speeches. You might try a "theme manual" -
do all ten speeches around a central theme. I did one on Australia, which I
have visited three times. I know someone who did an "all-Icebreaker"
manual, and I have heard of someone relating all speeches to Toastmasters in
some way. Pick an interest and you're on your way. That way you would
still be making speeches, and your club(s) could get credit when you earned
another CTM (or more than one).

Yes, I'd love to repeat the Storytelling manual several times, for instance.

Just ignore it. The DCP program is not so important as to disrupt your
personal growth and development; moreover, it's the distinguished CLUB
program, not the distinguished Betsy program Smile If the club as a whole
can't earn it without you doing a disproportionate amount of the work, let
them go without it for a year or two. Seriously

There's no "only" about it if you have no interest in some of the manuals
and want to repeat one, as Betsy was saying.

I am 70 years old and have been retired for years. I don't have any use for
the management manual, for instance. Some of us stay in Toastmasters
because we enjoy giving speeches of our choice and helping others to
advance. I have no desire for a DTM. As a matter of fact, I kept my old
ATM (3 advanced manuals and 2 outside speeches) for several years before I
gave it up as the result of a challenge from another member to earn my
ATM-S.

Plus, if you do a "theme CTM' you can explore a particular issue in
depth. You will then be an expert on the subject, and you will have 60
minutes of solid material from several interesting angles. Or... you
could then pick out the best of the best and wind up with one
incredible 5-7 minute contest winning speech.

Like almost anything, there were pluses and minuses to the point system.
Many more clubs are able to earn ribbons this way. Some clubs care about
that; some don't. If TI deems it necessary to keep the competitive aspect,
and to push for the achievement of various objectives, I could see
possibilities in a system combining some of the aspects of both the old and
the current one. For instance, any club with more than a certain number of
points could become Distinguished, etc. However, the points could be earned
as each club and its members saw fit. The current system has members who
sometimes hold off on applying for an ATM-S, for instance, because their
club already has enough ATM's to satisfy that requirement.

Also, I see two major flaws in the current system. One is the granting of
credit for turning in only one report on time, where two are required. I
would think both reports should be on time to get credit.

The second is the lack of credit for a Youth Leadership. Just as our youth
are the future of our world, and our countries, they are the future of
Toastmasters. IMNSHO, not nearly enough attention is paid to the
possibilities of grooming future Toastmasters.

As long as we're on this subject, I'd like to see something like an
Associate Membership or Junior Membership be made available to youth who
don't want to wait until they are 18 to joint Toastmasters. A member of one
of my clubs often brings his grandson to our meetings, and he is champing at
the bit to become a Toastmaster. We have allowed him to take various roles
at meetings, which he loves doing. He has even given an occasional speech.
He needs improvement, naturally, but he would improve faster if he were
allowed to become a member and come regularly.

I love this organization, or I wouldn't still be here after almost 16 years,
but just as I can still improve my speeches, the organization could also use
some improvement.
