I'm getting a new club in my area. They'll be having an official
officer inductions in a few more weeks, and as AG I'm officiating. Is
it appropriate for me to give them a gift? I was thinking of an
inexpensive gavel, since they don't have one. They cost about $12 and
the trophy shop will even inscribe it for free, so I could put the club
name and "established 2006" on it. What do you guys think? Appropriate
gesture or is it too much? Or, does someone have a better idea?

Thanks, Betsy

Betsy:

The club will receive a gavel in the charter material they receive from
TI. (unless this has changed) A new club would always appreciate an
Educational module from the Leadership or Speaker Series. Last year our
District Governor gave out an entire educational module to a new clubs
chartered. A gift of learning never ends.

Pshaw, it's an honour for a club to have the area govenor in attendence
and to induct new members no less. Remember, you are there FOR the
clubs, to serve them. You don't owe the clubs anything except to be
there when they need you.

Of course, do it for one, and they'll all want one too, and when it's
start spreading and all the clubs will want their AG to give them a
present and then I'll no longer be your friend ;)

That's an interesting idea. What else comes with the charter materials?

The club charter certificate
A gavel
Club constitution and Bye laws
20 New member CC manuals + CL manuals
Some promotional material
(Not sure if the 20 new member charter certificates or if these are
sent to the District Governor or if they are shipped in the same box)

A gift is a great idea, but it should be from you, as an individual,
rather than from the AG. This avoids setting a precedent. As Iona
points out, they'll be getting a gavel anyway. The idea of learning
modules is good, but I find that these disappear over time or nobody
remembers the source.

My suggestion is a small travelling trophy, say for the best
speech/table topic/evaluation of the evening. It always surprises me
how much importance most people attach to trophies and the like. You
might even add 'Presented by ...' to the inscription. This will ensure
that the club remembers you and your gift for many years.

Hmmm.... what about timing devices?

Great idea, but I'll have to visit a few times to see if they do the
voting thing. If I wait until I've visited the club a few times I could
also see what, if anything they need. And, it would keep it from being
"A gift from the AG on the first official visit."

Which is not only a smart idea but will keep me from turning into a
sort of "Typhoid Mary" of toastmasters...After all, I wouldn't want to
be responsible for starting the "Great Plano Epidemic of AG
Expectations." Smile

My corporate club which chartered earlier this year has a timing light which

was given to us as a gift. It wasn't from the area governor but from a
member of another club who works for our company and paid us a visit when
she was visiting our particular office. Such a gift would be appreciated by
any new club.

If you're talking about a stopwatch, and a set of colored cards, that's one
thing. However, if you're talking about timing lights, those can be quite
expensive.

The TI materials include a set of coloured cards for timing... but no
stop watch.
I'm sure I'm missing out on a lot of stuff they send out.

Amen to that... I was thinking inexpensive, which definitely means

nothing more fancy than a stopwatch!

By the way, are there plans for how to make a light box or do most
clubs just wait until an electrically-handy person becomes a member?

TI used to sell a very sophisticated (and expensive) one that could be set
for a specific time and the lights went on automatically. I don't think
they do any more. Other than that, I think it's as you say. The two clubs
with which I have personal experience both had someone design and make one.
The two boxes are totally different. One was made by a club member, since
deceased. The other was made by a friend of a member, and we paid $40 for
it about 10 years ago. Both are still working.

Here's what I finally decided:

The club had a gavel, and all the other inexpensive tools they really
needed. A second stopwatch might come in handy someday but wasn't
needed this year.

Instead, I decided to cover the club's contribution to the Fall
Contest. Each of my clubs is contributing $20--easy for established
clubs, but more of a strain for a brand new club, so it was an
appreciated gift. Plus, I think I got several people excited about
coming and bringing guests. I hope that happens--I hate going to
contests with only 4-5 people in the audience. Especially when it's a
humorous speech contest, because big audiences laugh a lot more and get
the speakers revved up. Bonus: if I can get them excited about this
contest, they'll be more likely to come to the Intl. Speech contest,
too.
