Are either of the following prohibited for the district:
1. The district pays for expenses (TI promotional brochures and similar
expenses) for an event to attract new members to existing clubs.
2. The district does not pay but is listed as the sponsor of an event to
attract new members to existing clubs.
I don't see anything in the rules to bar these. When I was D30 DG in Chicago |
we had a booth for several years at a large downtown trade show. We paid for
the booth and brochures. We had a directory with us so that we could give
visitors information on specific clubs in their towns and companies, and we
also took names of people who didn't have a club near them which we used to
target demo meetings for new clubs. Here in D60 they do something similar
with a booth at a large outdoor book and magazine festival, and they did a
pilot last year with billboard advertising in a specific geographic
location.
These kinds of events are not entirely controversy-free, as your question
suggests. Districts can't do everything that everyone wants, and choosing to
do certain promotional activities means that others can't be done. I know
for example we found it hard in Chicago to get volunteers to man our trade
show booth from outlying clubs since they saw this as something which would
benefit downtown clubs.

Thanks, Eric. That was helpful.
I already had reached my own conclusion (opinion) about the issue. I
just wanted to see what others think or know how it's handled. My
conclusion is that the district types make their own policies and
decisions of what type of projects they want to support or not. Which is
typical to many organizations. |
