After hemming and hawing due to the "sticker shock" of the $500+ full
package, I went to the Toastmasters International web site on Thursday
night (just before another $50 would have been tacked on to that
amount), I found an a la carte option that I think fits my needs. But
it's still $195 WITHOUT including the Speech Contest - that's another
$110! (And my District gets complaints for charging people $5.00-$10.00
to come just for the speech contest at the District Conference - a fee
mainly aimed at club members of contestants who can only find time or
interest to come and cheer them on. I say this without prejudice because
I was in this position back in 1993.)
One of our District's PDGs told me he thought the speech contest was
$60.00. Did I happen to run across something with $50.00 extra tacked on
a day too soon? $60.00 seems high but reasonable. $110.00 seems
exorbitant, but I bit the bullet and paid it.
So, I'll be there attending educational sessions on Thursday and
Saturday - I didn't see any on Friday, but if there are any, I'll be
there, too. And I'll be there on Saturday at 9:00 a.m. for the
International Speech Contest.
That's another thing - Rich Hopkins from the West Coast, I really feel
bad for you - competing at 6:00 a.m. your time. I always thought the
International Speech Contest was the final event of the International
Convention - on Saturday night or at least late afternoon. Is this a
change, or was I not paying much attention in the past?
Now to see where I end up spending the nights, because the deadline for
the special Toastmasters price was three days before the deadline for
the early registration.
I know I'm coming across with "addytood", as they say in Philadelphia,
but I am looking forward to this new adventure in my Toastmasters life.
I joined Toastmasters in 1991. But, before 2006:
I had never won a Division level contest.
I had never competed in a District level contest.
I had never served as a club President.
I had never served in a position of responsibility on a District
Conference committee.
And I had never attended an International Convention.
The first two have already happened this year (calendar year, not
program year). The next two are in the process of happening. And I'm
about to make the last one happen.

Regina,
No worries for me - I'm coming in Tuesday night and enjoying the whole
conference. I expect to be acclimated by Saturday. Besides, I think
some adrenaline might kick in. Richard Wira in Region II is from CA, so
he'll have the same challenge.
Speech contest has been $110 since day one this year, no increases. I
made hotel reservations at the TM price just today - so I'd at least
call them. Try sharing a room with someone if nothing is open. I've
shown up at region contests with no place to stay and never ended up on
the street....
Congrats on all your new adventures this year - makes it seem like a
whole new activity, doesn't it?

Great, hope I see you at the Convention. I'll be there everyday,
volunteering in some capacity or another. I don't know why we're having
the contest so early, but I'll be up and running from 5 am on that day.
We were instructed to take the Metro because there's no real parking
for volunteers... then they realized the Metro doesn't run that early.
Should be interesting... :-)
BTW who else is coming out? I posted my picture on the frappr map, so
if you see someone who looks like me, I hope you'll say hello.

By the way, who else is going this year?

Not this year.
Like Regina, I look at the price tag, and start hemming and hawing. And
when I factor in airfare and hotel rooms, the cost is quite high.
Though I notice the 2008 International Convention is just down the road
in Calgary, Alberta, so I will plan on attending that year.

I'll be there from Wednesday until the end of the convention. If you
spot me (I'm pretty easy to pick out of even a big crowd), please
introduce yourself.
I've met a handful of NG posters at various events during the last few
years, and hope that continues.

6:00 AM?!? The years that I competed it was always at 7:00. Maybe the
addition of an additional finalist since then just makes the
sound/video check a little bit too close to the door-opening cutoff
time for comfort.
Eh...it won't matter much. It's not like you're going to get a full
night's sleep, anyway... ;-)
See you on "the big stage"!

Out of curiosity, has the International Convention ever been held
outside of North America? The costs (including the addition of a
transatlantic flight) make it somewhat more expensive for me to attend
although I'd love to go one year.

Not that I'm aware of.
I'm not even sure it's been held outside of the United States and
Canada, evne though Mexico is only a short drive from TM WHQ.

I made some serious changes in it yesterday - its been good but not
GREAT! so I'm continuing to power it up.
My 16th public practice is tonight on a Yacht Cruise - hopefully they

That's a pity. I see letters in The Toastmaster magazine from people all
over the world bemoaning one article or another that shows the fact that
many people from the States have very poor cultural awareness beyond
their borders that I thought it would be an excellent opportunity to get
them a bit more cultured.
Also, selfishly, because I don't have the funds at present to make
another visit to North America at this time, and if I did I'd be
choosing western Canada as I've not visited there yet.
