|
|
I am going to give a speech about some things that happen in my kendo class,
with an attempt to put a humourous spin on them. When I give the speech, I
will be wearing my hakama (http://www.kungfu4less.com/hakama.html) when I
give the speech. I will actually talk about the hakama and use it as a
"prop," not just for comic effect.
Well, any way, Ithought of 3 different ways of opening the speech:
1. "You may have been wondering about this outfit that I have on. I did
not wear it because I thought it looked cool. I don't the Fonz could make
this look cool, let alone me..."
2. "You may have been wondering about this outfit that I have on. You might
be thinking that I am perhaps lost on going to an anime
cosplay(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cosplay) convention..."
3. "You may have been wondering about the outfit that I have on. Perhaps
you are thinking that Kuno-baby(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tatewaki_Kuno)
from Ranma 1/2(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ranma_%C2%BD) is a big hero of
mine..."
Option #3 just past through one ear and out the other, because I figured
that at most 1 or 2 people in the audience would get the reference, unless I
present the speech at an actual cosplay convention. I decided to go with
option #2.
However, I gave the speech as practice to my mom, dad, and sister. After I
gave it, my sister asked "what is anime," where I explained that anime is
Japanese cartoons and cosplay is dressing up as anime characters. I thought
even if a person does not watch anime, at least the term is known by many
people.
Have I overestimated how many people know what anime and cosplay are?
Should I go with option #1? I timed what I have, and it timed in at 5 1/2
minutes, so I really don't have time to explain what "anime cosplay" is, and
even if I did, any comic effect would probably be lost.
On the other hand, I have rehearsed it using option #2, and I might not
present it as smoothly if I change it this soon before the contest, which
will be on Tuesday.

Run with #1. You're right that having to explain the joke will kill
your momentum, and you're not talking about a wide enough pop culture
reference. On the other hand, unless you're talking to teenagers, just
about everyone will know who the Fonz is and why the comment is
funny.
Of course, I see the outfit and the first thing I think is "MC Hammer
pants"... |
