I decided to re-join toastmasters. I narrowed my choices of clubs down
to two nearby clubs. Both clubs are community clubs.
One club has more than 35 members. It's been around for a long time. It
has meetings 3 times per month. Its membership has ranged from 30-40.
Has members who are very good speakers. The club participates in
contests. The advantage is that you get to observe good speakers that
can raise your performance level. The disadvantage is that you don't get
the chance to be on the agenda as speaker frequently.
The other club is a few years old. It seems it has been struggling for a
while. Right now, it has 17 members. A couple of DTMs (the District
type). I haven't attended their meetings, but from second hand info,
most members are are newbies as speakers. This club is 5 minutes closer.
The club doesn't usually participate in contests. Because of fewer and
newer members, there are more opportunities to get on the agenda for a
speech.
My purpose for re-joining is to maintain a connection as a TM member. I
plan to attend meetings infrequently, once every 2/3 months. I already
have a DTM, pursuing educationals is not important.
Any opinions about which club to join?

It sounds to me as though the closer club needs members who will attend
regularly and be active in the club.

Before making your decision, I would attend a couple of
meetings of this club. Just to check out the second hand
info and get some direct impressions of the club.
I think once you have this, you will be in a better position
to decide which club to join.

Doesn't mean that it couldn't benefit from a less active
member, especially when less active member is a DTM.
I think the personality fit is more important.

I agree with John, attend at least one meeting for the second club.
For me it's not about what I will get out of or offer the club, but
which club makes me more comfortable. Which club is more exciting?
Also, if you are really looking for a connection to TM, the district
leaders will be helpful.

I agree with John, attend at least one meeting for the second club.

As others have said, it all depends on what feels right to you after
visiting both. personally i'd go for the larger club, mostly so that I
wouldn't feel pressured to take leadership roles in the smaller club.
