Well, it took a little soul searching.
I hemed a bit and I hawed a bit.
I did some deep thinking, and even now there are a couple of
tweaks to make in the planning.
But in a speech at my Toastmasters club tonight, I put the
"Embarrass Your VP Membership Campaign" into action.
I have given them three stretch peformance targets that are
a bit beyond what the club has ever achieved, and challenged
them to deliver on two of the three. The targets are -
- 33% membership growth (to 24 paid members)
- Average of four guest per meeting
- Average member attendance of 80%
For the purposes of the averages, the campaign runs from
September 1 to May 31.
I don't think the club can do it, and their job is to prove
me wrong.
If I'm right, it's business as usual.
If I'm wrong, I will wear appropriately feminine attire to
one club meeting next June, and I will get my hair dyed some
interesting shade like magenta. I will do this because the
club has embarrassed me and this is a way to show my
embarrassment.
(This is in addition to a couple of shorter, more
conventional, membership-building contests where the person
with the most ponts gets some kind of prize.)

Of course I'm going to aim high on this one.
If my club is really going to embarrass the VP M, naely
yours truly, I figure they should have to work their back
ends off for it.
I just can't set the targets so high they'd give up before
they even try.
However, if the club aims to get an 80% paid member turnout,
it will add a nice bit of energy to the meetings.
If the club can is getting between 16 and 20 guests out
every month (four per week and not allowing for repeats),
and they aren't signing up at least one new member a month,
then we are doing something very, very wrong.
If the club is signing up a member a month over the course
of the program, they should blow the 24 member target right
out of the water, assuming we don't lose anybody.
And even if the club doesn't meet two of the three targets,
if I do things right, they should have a ton of fun trying.

I can certainly post updates from time to time.
In addition to a monthly report to the club during the
business meeting, I will be taking other opportunities to
keep the club progress "on the radar". E-mail updates,
announcing milestones at the end of the meeting during the
announcement period, circulating extra printed reports from
time to time, posting "ads" at the meeting location on
occasion.
Because the data will be available, it wouldn't take more
than a few seconds to post something here, say, once a month
or so.
Because of the length of the "Embarrass the VP PR Campaign",
it it isn't kept visible in the club, it isn't going to
work.

What would you suggest is more realistic given the club
currently gets about two guests per week with membership
building on autopilot? Also, the guests and attendance
targets only have to be maintained between September and
May, that is, outside the summer months.
This is the kind of feedback I want on the program as
proposed. And if I am going to make adjustments to the
targets, I need to have that done before the TM year starts
on July 1.

Often they are, but not always.
With the target as I have proposed it, I don't requre four
new guests per week. Only that they be reasonably able to
particiapte in the Toastmasters program, that is, they are
over 18, breath, and can afford the membership fee.
I want the goal to be something of a stretch, but do you
think it would be better if I backed off the average number
of guests per week to three? That would be 12 to 15 guests
per month, with some being repeats.
Assume 1/3 are repeats, then the club really only has to
find somewhere between eight and ten fresh guests each
month. And if they could turn one of those into a new
member each month, they could still reach 24 members by the
end of next May.

they start to question and analyze every belief that they ever held dear. If
a certain belief passes the tests of evidence, deduction, and logic, it
should be kept. If it doesn't, the belief should not only be discarded, but
the thinker must also then question why he was led to believe the erroneous

they
$all come from?

Surprisingly enough John, we gained 2 of our members this year
from the Summer Meeting.

I don't think the club can do it, and their job is to prove
me wrong.

Excellent goals, John. The third one (80% attendance) is probably
unrealistic but I wouldn't change it.
The next step is to tell your club what each member and officer should
do to meet those goals and what you plan to do to help them meet those
goals. The "telling" should be asking, telling, and doing.
Good luck. |

It is an average, and not a minimum.

Step one for the club to do it, to borrow an idea from sales
trainer Tom Hopkins, is to aim to blow those targets right
out of the water.
If the club aims to get *just* 24 members, they'll finish
below 24. Someone will drop out in the spring or get
transferred part way through the year for work reasons. And
the club winds up with 22 or maybe 23.
If the club aims to get *just* 4 guests per meeting, they
get a bad run late in the year, and the average drops below
4. (Though given Joy's input, I'm considering lowering this
target to 3. I don't want to take it lower or it will seem
too much like business as usual.)
Similar kind of argument for 80% attendance. If the club
members work for 85% or even 90%, they are much more likely
to reach the 80%. If they aim for just 80%, they'll end up
with something like 75% or even 70%.
Anyway, under the rules of the game, the cluib only needs to
achieve two of the three. Any two.
While the best way to get two is to aim for all three, if
they come up short on attendance, as long as they get guests
and membership, I will be horribly embarrassed, have to dye
my hair some interesting shade like bright green, and wear a
skirt to a Toastmasters meeting.
Oh, and given my reputation as a short haired,
professionally dressed Toastmaster, some of the members who
have know me for over a decade might try extra hard a) just
to see if I will follow through, and b) see me in a totally
different light.
