I've had it with the SPAM.

I have started another group at http://groups.google.com/group/toastmastersprime
- anyone can join and post, but I will serve as moderator (and any
other folks that decide they want to).

New members posts will not post automatically until I give them
clearance - so Sam, as soon as you post, you'll be approved, and it
will work just as this one does.

I hope you'll all join me over there, and we can continue to have the
free, fun, and educational discussions we've enjoyed here.

Except you can't use it with a news reader, you have to use the awful
Google interface.

Agreed. That's my concern. There are already several TM newsgroups, but
none are used nearly as much as alt.org.toastmasters.

Nigel - I understand your frustration, just as I'm sure you understand

everybody, but hopefully it will work for many. I'd love to have you
posting there.

I would be more than happy to host a NNTP server if there's one
we could use and my hosting provider supports it. I spent about
10 minutes looking just now and couldn't find anything appropriate.
Maybe someone else has experience in this?

I also looked at moderated usenet. It seems a pain in a different
way. It would be nice to just moderate membership rather than
messages. It scales much bettter.

I would like this group back to the way it was. I use google as
it sends me an email with the posts. I don't use any other news
groups. I would use RSS if there was some way to filter out
the spam.

I am more than happy to help alleviate this in any way I can if
we can come up with a solution.

I agree - I wish this group could go back to the way it was.

The way I've set up ToastmastersPrime is that all members can post
without moderation - but the moderator(s) approves the membership in
an effort to avoid the spamming element.

Interesting how much I hear about how bad the Google interface is - I
think its just a matter of what we're used to. I love the Google
interface - its easy to use, allows for RSS readers, and keeps things
organized. But we stick with what we like, and that's understandable.

I'd love it if we could find a great solution for everybody. After
that, I'd like to pay off the deficit, solve world hunger, and create
world peace.

Rich.

You could look at using leafnode which will fetch messages from your
ISPs news server but allow access to certain groups. You can use regular
expressions for filtering. Not sure how it'd work with the current
problem though. Otherwise you'd have to go for a full blown usenet
server such as INN or CNEWS and run something like cleanfeed.

You can't moderate who posts, but you can moderate which posts appear in
the newsgroup. This'd take a fair amount of discussion. A cmsg would
have to be sent and then we'd have to rely on every news admin accepting
the change.

We'd all like to see it go back to the way it was. However it looks like
we're getting blased once a day for a day or two. This is managable, I
think.

Most nntp clients can handle multipe servers, but people are less likely
to find us if we're on another server somewhere.

Snip!

A thought for those that prefer usenet and don't want to make
the transition to google groups:

How about a Yahoo! group? Membership can be approved easily by
any of the moderators. Messages can be read online as well as sent
to your email.

While I realize that it isn't usenet and doesn't work with a reader,
you
can setup rules in your email client that comes close. You can also
reply to the posts in email easily.

We could then post a periodic message to this group to let people know
to come to the Yahoo! group.

What it comes down to for me is that I prefer "push" messages rather
than "pull" messages. Email and RSS come to me without my effort.
Usenet I have to go get and will forget to most of the time.

I use my own webmail email reader. I don't use virus prone readers like
Outlook Express so no, I wouldn't be able to do that. I belong to far
too many web forums for me to visit them all. Usenet works just fine for
what it is. A collection of discussion groups, easily arranged and
accessable. Another web based discussion means another website to visit,
another bookmark to remember to look at, another set of passwords. If
you join one Toastmasters group, why wouldn't you join all of them?
That's why I am reluctant to do this. Why doesn't every Toastmaster
setup their own discussion area?

There's a reason I haven't setup my own discussion forum on
toastmasters.sysadmininc.com

And every other group? Then this would just become an announcement
group.

I'm the other way around. I visit many usenet groups, on a regular
basis. There's web based forums I've signed up for and forgotten about
because I don't have time, forgot about them, or some other reason.

Having a web based email reader doesn't preclude this from working.
I only use web-based email.

With Yahoo! Groups, you would rarely need to go to the website. Only
if you want to change some configuration. It forwards all the
messages
to your email.

This is the only usenet group I read.

I totally understand your other comments about just having a single
place to communicate.

Looks like Toastmasters Forum duplicates the spam too. Maybe
if they could mirror this group and remove the spam?

I just wrote to the creator of this site to ask if filtering of the
spam
was a possibility. I will update this group to let you know the
response.

Why not just as your usenet provider to run cleanfeed?
