I'm hearing this phrase more and more. A question is asked, or the speaker
introduces a broad concept. This is followed by a pause then the words,
"And, so what happens is ...."

This phrase is, of course, almost always just an empty filler.

Question: How does the light turn on?

Filler response: And, so what happens is that the user walks to a wall
mounted switch plate and activates the light.

Better response: The user flips a switch.

When did this phrase get introduced to our lexicon? I'm always amazed at
how quickly new terms and phrases spread in our global cultures. (e.g the
verb "to google")

To paraphrase Kurt Cobain, language can be stupid...and contagious.

Just googled your phrase in quotation marks, and what happens is you get
52,800 hits! Smile It's not one I'd noticed, but now that I think about it
you're right.
