My office-based club holds a Speechcraft each spring and we are
gearing up again for Speechcraft 2008. Somebody raised the fact that
the Speechcraft manuals that we have aren't in line with the Competent
Communicator's manual.
Specifically, the CC projects are:
1. Icebreaker.
2. Organize Your Speech
3. Get to the Point
4. How To Say It
5. Your Body Speaks
6. Vocal Variety
7. Research Your Project
8. Get Comfortable With Visual Aids
9. Persuade With Power
10. Inspire Your Audience
The Speechcraft projects are:
1. Icebreaker
2. Be In Earnest
3. Organize Your Speech
4. Show What You Mean
5. Vocal Variety
6. Work With Words
Speechcraft project 1 matches with CC 1. Speechcraft project 3
matches with CC 2.
Speechcraft project 4 matches with CC 5. Speechcraft project 5
matches with CC 6.
Speechcraft project 6 matches with CC 4. Speechcraft project 2
doesn't match with anything.
All the Speechcraft projects correspond to the old CTM manual from way
back.
Have they changed the Speechcraft manuals yet? If not, are there
plans? When Speechcrafters join the club upon completing speechcraft,
we give credit for any completed Speechcraft courses, but it gets
confusing since the projects don't match the CC manual.
I figure I'll get some interesting and informed responses here.
Thanks. |

Actually I've done a couple of Speechcrafts and seen others, and to my
thinking there's no reason it needs to line up. I've never had anyone in
a Speechcraft finish all the projects anyway. The last one we did had 30
participants, so each project was worked on by all, but we only called on
a few people for each task to actually give their speeches such that when
it was over, most had only actually delivered 2 speeches.
Speechcraft is a class unto itself, which if done well will leave the
participants wanting more and thus joining a club. If it's small enough
that everyone gets to actually do all the projects, then they're halfway
through their CC (5 will count as you observe). Even that's a bit of a
cheat, as the speeches are shorter when given in a Speechcraft than
what's required in the CC Manual.

My club typically have classes of 6-10 people, so we usually get 3
Speechcraft speakers per class. We require that they complete 3 to
graduate. That means they usually do "Icebreaker", "Speak In
Earnest", and "Organize Your Speech". Then if they join the club (and
at least half do), they get a manual with a third project "Get to the
Point" that isn't covered in Speechcraft and they get confused.
We've been telling people to just give project 4 and move on, but it
is confusing. |

Well when I do it, in the last class of the Speechcraft I explain that so
there's no confusion later. Since every Speechcraft ends up being
different anyway I just explain the Toastmasters Club concept, the Basic
Manual, tell them there are 10 projects to get their CC and that several
of those projects are the ones they have already been exposed to and can
use to help complete their CC.
I think the difficulty arises when people assume or are told that the CC
manual is linear. The truth is, no particular order is enforced or should
be. Speeches 1 and 10 should be in that order, but the others pretty much
stand alone and can be done in any order. Granted it's simpler just to do
them 1-10 and most do, but it shouldn't be confusing to have to ones from
Speechcraft already done no matter which ones they are.

*I* don't know of plans to change the speecraft manual.
I think that there is maximum limit of how many speehcraft speeshes can
be used for credt for the CTM/CC manual. I think up to 5, check the
manual for sure.
The objectives for Speechcraft#2 (based on the old CTM manaul) seem to
match with CC#3. The project objetives may have been re-worded and focused.

Thanks for the feedback. The idea of explaining the differences
between the Speechcraft and CC manual to graduating speechcrafters who
join the club is an excellent one.
I was hoping that we'd get an ID on the site to pledge his/her support
in updating the Speechcraft manual, however! :)
Oh well. Perhaps the IDs were detered by all of the junk postings. |

The IDs are very cautious about discussing policy in an open newsgroup.
Even Susan, who was the most out spoken ID in this newsgroup, was
cautious while she was on the board. IMHO, her postings and website
after she was on the board cost her a shot at 3rd VP. She has now left
Toastmasters to pursue the leadership track of another organization.

That makes me so sad. I was wondering what happened to her. I guess I
will never understand this big need for secrecy. IMO, if toastmasters
would take the opposite tactic and encourage open discussion, they
would get a lot more participation and a lot more new members.
Oops, guess I just blew my chances to ever rise above the lofty
position of AG.... |
