Anyone ever heard of this? It was mentioned at TLI today. The idea is
the club gives the windbag award to anyone who goes more than 1 minute
over time.
Not sure if this would be a big hit--or if it wouldn't go over well at
all.
Also suggested--have the club meeting start with everyone reciting the
Toastmasters Pledge instead of the Pledge of Allegiance. The idea is
to remind people of the responsibilities they agreed to when they
joined the club. |

I think I'm going to suggest this for my Advanced Club, but not for my
regular club.

Hi Betsy;
In Australia, we use a toast rather than a pledge, I also know of some
advanced clubs which recite the TM promise.
AS for a windbag award - maybe not. It is a rule in my new club -
probably instigated by me - that an icebreaker goes for as long as is
necessary. It is there chance to get up in front of the lectern, and
have a go. If 15 minutes makes their "butterflies fly in formation" then
so be it. Our sponsoring club, though, does not like this idea!! All
other speeches should be close to time.

My first club, which disqualified people for "Best (whatever)" if they
weren't within 30 seconds of indicated times, did the same thing.
Icebreakers were exempt from the disqualification. My current club that
votes doesn't disqualify anybody. I periodically suggest it, and am always
voted down.

Mass recitations, especially routine and scheduled mass recitations are not
something which I find at all inspiring.
I would suggest having a member read the Mission of the Club.
