Are you allowed to have a toastmaster group meet outdoors (like in a
public park or on a beach)? I know there might be some challenges with
microphones, but do such groups exist? I'm not talking about an annual
party, but a regular meeting.

I'm sure it would be allowed. Whether it would be practical is something
else. Weather could definitely be a consideration. I did know of a club
that had some of their regular meetings in a park, but I suspect attendance
at an outdoor meeting would be poor to nonexistent if it were very hot, very
windy, or rainy.

That would be interesting. I guess you'd need a backup location in
case of rain. Maybe a park with a community center in it.

I don't think it would work here in Lubbock. Too cold in the winter
(20s & 30s), too hot in the summer (100s & 110s), and too windy in the
spring (30+ mph is common). Fall would be OK, though. :)

In a quest for the ultimate table topic Betsy posed:
Quote:
Are you allowed to have a toastmaster group meet outdoors (like in a
public park or on a beach)... not an annual party, but a regular meeting?

Madam Topicmaster,
Just because something has never been done, it does not mean that it cannot
be done.

Sure someone somewhere will find a rule. But human progress has relied on
the breach of rules. In the same way, progress has been stalled because
people feared that if it was such a good idea then someone somewhere must
have banned it.

But in this case there is no rule to be broken and not even the most
interfering do gooder control freak has ever thought of prohibiting this.

It is hard to understand why.

Imagine the pleasure of speaking in the rain. Sure, some wimps will want to
unfurl umbrellas. Well let them. Some will want to wear rain coats. Let
them. But do not stop me experiencing the exhilaration of a rainy day
address.

In another season, visualise the sun streaming down. Certainly we must wear
hats. There is a rule about that. And sunscreen. At least 30+. Make sure it
offers protection from both UVA and UVB rays. Remember, sunscreen isn't
just for preventing sunburn at the beach; use it whenever you venture
outdoors.

At night, imagine the romance of meeting beneath a silvery moon.

In winter, let's make our chairs from snow. In the fall the sergeant at arms
may have raking the leaves added to the duties.

The joys are endless.

No madam topicmaster, there is no requirement that every Toastmasters club
must meet under a roof. In fact there does not appear to be a regulation
that demands any Toastmasters club meet indoors.

And why should there be?

Let's get out of here, before they ban it.

A friend of mine wants to start a beach toastmasters in Redondo Beach.
It would meet early in the morning, on the sand, at the foot of the
steps at Ave. C. Obviously, business suits will not be required
attire. I'm not sure if he's joking or not... (I suspect there may be
an ulterior motive of hoping to meet cute girls at the beach this way).
I don't know how long it would take such a club to charter, I have a
feeling it would be in limbo for years and years and years.

Business suits will not be required.

Maybe he just wants to improve his eye contact.

Yes, I can imagine maintaining eye contact could be a challenge if some
of the girls wear bikinis...

I tried to be helpful and offer some suggestions for a club name. First
I suggested Burnt Toastmasters (but apparently that's been taken). Then
I thought about sun tan oil and suggested Hot Buttered Toastmasters.
For some reason, that wasn't appreciated...

On occasion, clubs around here do run an outdoor meeting--often in
conjunction with a year end party or similar ocassion.

To meet outdoors here year round would be impractical. Temperatures can
reach as high as the low 90s (F)/30s (C). In winter, temperatures will
dip to the low -30s (both F and C).
